How To Take Control Of Chronic Pain

How to take control of chronic pain is one for some of us a quest that can take a life time. Chronic pain and I are friends we have been friend for 9 years and I feel like we will be friends for years to come. I have tried so many ways to keep my pain in check. I wanted to share some of what I have learned from going to pain management classes. I hope that they might help you by knowing we are all looking for answers.

Know your chronic pain:

  • Where dose your pain originate, from your back, neck, feet, hands, skin, head etc.?
  • What gives you relieve?
  • How long does it last?
  • Does it go completely away or it is it with you always?

Medication:

  • Acetaminophen (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory) – has the fewest side effects.
  • Antidepressants which maybe used to treat chronic pain.
  • Corticosteroids which are used to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Oral medication acts like a local anesthetic to dull pain.
  • Anticonvulsants can ease pain that starts in the nerves.
  • Topical analgesics-cream or a  patch can numb the skin ans reduce the pain.
  • Cooling sprays directly on the skin.
  • Capsaicin a natural substance found in chili peppers use cation and gloves when applying to pain area. Keep away from eyes.
  • Opioid
  • Nerve blockers
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Tiger points injections

These methods of chronic pain relief work well for a lot of people there are risk involved when using medications, be sure to discus the side effects with your doctor this is your responsibility.We are all looking for relief and what works for one person may not work for you and if you tried it for one type of pain and it did not work doesn’t mean it won’t work for the pain that you are having now. Get all the facts, educate yourself before you jump in with both feet.

Alternatives to taking medication

  • Pain management classes
  • Acupuncture
  • Message therapy
  • Herbs (discuses with doctor especially when taking medications)
  • Botox injections

While I am not a doctor or claim to be one I have live with my friend pain for 9 years and have been keeping it under control for the best part of the last 9 years. So as you read over my post I hope that you may in fact find something that might want to learn more about.

What Works On Pain

What works on pain. I have found from my experience very few things give me relief. When I find something, I want to celebrate and share it with anyone that will listen. I am on a mission to enjoy an abundant life and to take you along for this ride. These are some of the alternatives treatments that can be used with or with out medication and at any age.

  • Acupuncture is one of the tools that I use, is has brought me relief that medications could not. This treatment has been used for centuries. The procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into various points on the body to relieve pain this sounds like torture, right. It was the reason I tried medication, I thought taking a pill would help and it ended up making me so sick I had to find a different way. That’s when out of desperation I decided to find out and seek a skilled Licensed Doctor to explain and give me treatments. This changed the way I look at alternatives when it comes to my health.
  • Botox Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and is known to be highly neurotoxic. The reason I wanted to bring this up is, a member of our group was recovering from one health issue and came down with shingles in and around his eye. He was in so much pain we all felt so bad for him. One day he came into group and was smiling and so excited to share that his physical therapist suggested for a plastic surgeon to try botox in the area in and around his eye and it worked. What a blessing for him and it made me think that when it comes to pain think out of the box.
  • Massage Therapy is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function and promote relaxation and well-being. So many people find that this is the treatment for them I tired this but found I didn’t get the relief I was looking for.
  • Chiropractors management of the neuromusculoskeletal system without the use of medicines or surgery,with special emphasis on the spine. Some people swear by this therapy, relief is measured in days and weeks.
  • Diet is one of the things that I had to look at because of family history and physical limits. Lo fat is best filled with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies. Cholesterol is one of the big issues that I deal with, statins are the medical choice, when diet and exercise is not working. I however can’t tolerate the side effects of this medication or even the supplement red rice yeast. Fish oil and prescription niacin is helping me to lower  my bad cholesterol(LDL) and triglycerides with the benefits of raising my good cholesterol(HDL). I won’t recommend how much of either, we are all different. Asks your Doctor. Diet has been on the front of so many treatments from cancer to autism.
  • Sleep there is no better way to start your day then after a great night of sleep. When pain is overwhelming sleep is a friend that is always welcome. Depending on the side effects of certain medications you are better off taking them before you go down for the night. Don’t under estimate how we benefit from sleep.
  • Activity any activity you can add to your life will effect pain, the ones that help are exercises that support your posture, muscle strength and mental health. If it keeps my mind off my pain I’m all for it.
  • Conversation is one of the best ways to keep your mind off of pain. When we hurt it is hard not to dwell and have self pity and yet when we are engaged in a good conversation we don’t have time for pain even though we know it is there we just don’t pay so much attention to it.
  • Supplements are used more and more in the treatment of pain. Those of us that use them know that they helping and will continue to take them.

What works on pain for me may not work for you, I do know that when you are dealing with pain you need to keep your body in top from. What works is getting  your mind and body strong so it can take on the job it has ahead of its self. I don’t want my chronic pain to inter fear with my life or how I want to live it. What works is excepting that it is what it is and you need to find your own answers. The bottom line is find something that works and stick with it until you don’t need it anymore or It doesn’t work for you any longer then find something else.

Those of us that live with chronic pain can tell you that there are days that nothing helps. These are days that I say knock me flat I can not do anything but lie and sleep off and on. My hours awake on these days I use as many tools in my relief chest that I can find. I don’t mind taking time for my body and like I said I am going to live my life to the fullest.

I love people and I want them to be happy with me but I don’t let them control me. I am led by the Holy Spirit.

Glad to see you came back  for more , when you are dealing with pain, the determination to get out of it at any cost is the main focus of your life. Art Therapy is a great way to express yourself along with keeping a journal, creating a picture of your pain in an abstract painting and if you are having trouble with your joints in your hands work with clay or play dough. Our Mind and body working together is the key to reprogramming your brain on the new goal you have set for yourself. If you want to move your whole body while you work on your master piece create something that is big and you have to move around to get it just right.

  • Painting

Helps with hand eye coordination along with moving upper parts of the body.

  • Drawing

Helps with hand eye coordination and strengthen the muscles in the hand and forearms.

  • Sculpture

Helps with hand eye coordination and with stiff joints in hands, arms and depending on how large you work you can work all joints and muscle groups.

  • Crafts

Sculpture,drawing and painting,and crafts all help with keeping you busy doing things that enrich your life improve on Hand and eye coordination, moving body parts to strengthen muscle groups to support aching  joints and the best part of art therapy is this.

The reasons this help us so much is you are moving and it takes your brain to focus on something other than pain.

If you try this therapy don’t worry about doing it wrong there is no wrong in art just like with people we are all beautiful. Besides art is in the eyes of the beholder.


Physical Therapy are you ready for this,” I have been there and it did not work” I heard this over and over again in my group and my words are”thought it helped a little” You are either going to do the work all the time or suffer. Its plain and simple. Be aware of the mechanics of the body and the nervous system. Watch the way you move if it is creating pain or increasing your pain you may not be;

  • Moving we think we know how to we have done this our whole life, we guess again unless you are trained correctly with chronic pain you don’t know. This is how I found out I was wrong.  A physical therapist who had three knee replacements came and showed us three small steps to improve our lives and it started improving my life immediately.
  • Standing do you stand in your pain or does your pain stand out on you. When you stand are you aware of your posture are your shoulders back, is your head up. If you are not standing and walking with good posture you my friend are walking into a fall and this will cause you more pain. I am a child of if you stick your chest out you are a hussy or a tramp. So it was hard to change my mindset there and i am so Happy I did.
  • Sitting we are sitting with our backs compromised all the time for long periods. Be thoughtful are your elbows on the table, Sit up straight and now I know why.
  • Sleeping or lying down when we have no aches and pains we can sleep anywhere and some people any position. You have to take cation when you are in pain so you don’t wake up in more pain. Getting enough sleep is so important, I have found if I lay to long without changing my position can add to my pain. Using pillows in the right areas will support areas without compromising joints and muscles. I use memory foam pillows and I also have many shapes, like a wedge, cylinder, squares and rounds.

Physical Therapy is not something you stop. Physical therapist are there to show us how are muscles and tendons work and how important it is to adapt this in our daily lives. Finding a therapist is done usually by your Doctor. If you are in therapy asks questions on how not why. How can I support my back what ways will best help me in my condition. A great therapist will be more than happy to share especially because this is what the know and are willing to pass it on. I have found that they are pressed for time so try to make your appointments when they are not so busy, they can talk to you when you are doing your exercises and it makes the time go faster.

If they suggest you use a walker or a cane do it or use a walking stick the issue should not be vanity, when you are working on getting  in the best posture for you body and your condition.

Medicine is more than finding that magic pill, or cutting this out and you will feel better. Anyone that is in pain can tell you it is one of the worst experience and when you are in pain all the time it is often over looked by others. They become desensitized by just being around you. Not that you want pity. Support from friends and family that take time to understanding and education on why and how to help is niece. Medicine is using all the tools that we can get our hands on to keep our bodies and minds healthy.

Take your health and the movement of your body is more important to you as you get older. I say start before you are in trouble support the body and mind with, exercise, regular screening set up with your doctors recommendations and know the products that you are putting in your body. I am excited with and proud to suggest great products that I use in so many ways they help with my plan to better health and my pain management.
