Your Digestive Health

The digestive system’s main role is to extract energy and nutrients from food. These functions are compromised, however, when there’s a lack of healthy intestinal bacteria. There are products to help replenish healthy bacteria in the gut with a unique and proprietary blend of probiotics—tiny organisms that help restore health and balance to the intestinal tract. Probiotics are essentially the opposite of antibiotics and are often referred to as friendly or beneficial bacteria.

Every day we are exposed to environmental factors that destroy these “good” bacteria—chlorinated water, processed foods, stress, alcohol and antibiotics—so it is necessary to replenish them with probiotics.I use these probiotics and I love them I have taken my digestive health more serious since I have gotten older little problems I had at one time seemed to get worse the older I got. After talking to my doctor I started to take probiotics. I would bye them from the health food store, they had to be refrigerated and the cost was about the same as what I pay now for the Qore probiotics, the problem was that the health food store did not have them in stock all the time leaving me with a system that was out of whack. I tried the yogurts and a couple of didn’t brands then I found Qivana and not only did this product keep my feeling great I notice changes in energy levels my skin and my over all well being. I will introduce this product to anyone to help manage their IBS. I thought you may like to know more about this product from Qivana so  here are the facts:

What Do My Numbers Mean

Cholesterol just the word raises questions like what is it and what are these numbers? Not to many of us pay attention to cholesterol until they have a blood test. When I was told I had high cholesterol I did every thing I could to find out all about it. Have you tested your cholesterol lately? High cholesterol has no symptoms it is a silent health problem. As I found out  after my doctor ordered a fasting lipoprotein profile. The test included my total cholesterol, LDL (bad), HDL (good) and triglycerides.

After finding out I had high LDL and high triglyceride  I left her office armed with treatment options. The diet was the first part of the my treatment plan.

The Diet

  • Choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products.
  • Choose legumes(beans and peas), baked or grilled fish, skinless poultry and lean meats.
  • Eat lots of fruits and veggies and a variety of whole grains and high fiber foods.

I had to limit the amount of foods with low nutrition, beverages and foods that contain sugar. Most of all limit how much saturated fats and trans fats. I went from eating what I thought was a health diet to one recommend to lower my cholesterol and triglycerides. I became aware of more than the calories on a food label.

The changes to my eating was not enough to lower the numbers. What do these numbers mean?

Total Cholesterol according to the American Heart Association.

  • Less than 200 mg/dl is desirable
  • 200-239 mg/dl you are borderline high
  • 240 mg/dl and above you have high cholesterol

LDL Cholesterol

  • Less than 100 mg/dl is optimal
  • 100-129 mg/dl is near optimal
  • 130-159 mg/ dl is borderline high
  • 160-189 mg/ ld is high
  • 190 mg/ ld and above is very high

HDL protects the heart so 60 or above are ideal, the higher the better.

My treatment plan was not enough to battle my cholesterol issues so onto step 2 which added red rice yeast, CoQ10 and  fish oil. It was bringing my numbers down but I had side effects from the red rice and the CoQ10. My doctor and I tried stations. I had side effects  and now I am seeing a cardiologist to help manage my cholesterol. My family history is heart diease and I am doing what I can to prevent it with the help of my doctors. Keep track of your cholesterol numbers, high cholesterol doesn’t cause symptoms and have a screening every five years starting at the age of 20. Everyone over the age of 2 should follow a heart healthy diet.

My light shall break forth like the morning, and my healing shall spring forth speedily.             ISAIAH

Alternative Medicine A Community To Embrace

Alternative medicine is a variety of therapeutic or preventive health care practices. Homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, and herbal medicine that do not follow generally accepted medical methods and may not have a scientific explanation for their effectiveness. The medical community is starting to realize that some of these treatments do in fact work. The doctors that do embrace them will help if this is your choice to include these practices in your health care.

Do you keep an open mind? Looking for answers are not easy when treating some conditions, for instance, chronic pain. Some days are better than others but the fact is its pain. You have to deal with it. I see my family doctor for regular visits and working close with her and what my treatment options are. I get acupuncture treatment once a week. This one of the tools I use to manage my pain. I am so glad this treatment is close to where I live and my doctor suggest this as an alternative to pain medications that would make me sick and I would be sick and still in pain. Would I have tried it if she would not have suggested? I really did not know too much about it until I needed it so, probably not. Fear of the unknown is what keeps most of us from trying something new.

You have to become your own alternative medicine; start out by learning as much on nutrient as you can to prevent health issues that your pockets can’t afford. Start to exercise if you don’t already and keep up your immunizations, do your part take care of yourself. Look into treatments and discussing them with your doctor. Treatments that cost hundreds of dollars are beyond most of our budgets especially because our wage doesn’t account for inflation or the economy. What will our insurance cover and what if I have no insurance?

Learn about the things that don’t cost that much to practice and embrace the notion that one ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cures. Look to your diet and find foods that will enable your body to heal its self. There are exercises that will support your muscles and strengthen your bones. Today you can find information everywhere.

The medical field has come a long way in how they treat people, now it is time for the insurance companies to get on board. They say that there is not enough evidence to support the many treatments that are out there. Unfortunately they are all about telling you what you have to do. My insurance is great they send a monthly news letter with information on useful health tips. They are willing to step up and pay for most medical treatments and I think that great. I wish that they would pay for acupuncture as well.

it is time that the insurance companies take some of the millions that we pay and use the money to research the treatments that are proven by the amount of people who use them and repeatedly tell our doctors that this does work.

Covered, who gets to choose? More doctors are willing to work with you, why not the insurance companies. Why can’t we pick a specialist based on alternative treatments when it comes your body? The insurance companies can find those who have established themselves in the medical community, a licensed by the state and a degree in medicine. Currently work with the health care system we pay out of our pockets for their care.

Everyone one tells me that they can do nothing. If you want treatments outside of coverage, you pay for it. This leaves me to think insurance is only useful if you fall into the boundaries of the company and the plan they offer. We really are at the mercy of these companies.

In a perfect world we would not get sick and we would not need insurance. Since that is not the case we live in fear of what if’s. Keep the pressure up, is what our doctors tell us. It is consumers that need to advocate change write letters and talk to your insurance companies. The problem is you don’t think about it until you need it.

Can we convince these corporations that acupuncture is so much better for me then the medication that they will pay for or that if they supplied vitamins in schools and a healthy meal high in antioxidants, good fats and fiber to start out their day children may do better in school and get fewer viruses? That doing something small in the early years will prevent costly treatments later in life.

The amount of control the government has in public education and the amount of control insurance companies have on the treatment we can afford to get is mind-boggling. Why can’t insurance take part of the premium a put it to better use? Working together the insurance companies with the public school system and the government can design a preventive program. A program that is as important as reading writing and math. Our future is in the hands of our youth and yet we leave their welfare to those that can’t offer what every child is needs. We say it is our right to have a health happy life but no one tells you it is going to cost you even when you have insurance. If you are sick prevention does little good.

He who is greatest among you shall be servant.                                            MATTHEW 23:11
